About Henna
Today, although henna decorations are mostly used in India and Pakistan for decoration of hands and feet by women, henna decorations has become a contemporary mean of body decoration throughout the world by both men and women. In part, this is attributed to its appearance of a tattoo while being impermanent.
Henna is traditionally used in hair cleansing, conditioning, and occasionally as a temporary dye to color fabrics and textiles. Henna is also used as a medicinal plant, because of its attributed antibacterial, antifungal, astringent, antihemorrhagic, hypotensive, and sedative effects. It has also been used as a folk remedy against headache, jaundice, and leprosy in many world cultures.
Color and cautions
Natural Henna gives a dark red/ brownish color when applied on skin. If you carefully prepare the mixture of henna and follow guidelines for its application you will be able to moderate the shade from red to a dark brownish shade - but never black.
Black Henna is mixed with chemicals (PPD) to give a lasting black effect. No natural henna can give you the black effect without chemicals - no matter what suppliers claim it will have some amount of PPD. PPD is extremely hazardous and contributes to cancer and permanent allergic reactions. Use these pages to learn about natural Henna and how to give it a safe and fun use.
